Do you have a cookie at home that likes to sing? Donna Bennett and Brian Finley at Westben are pleased to welcome you to the Westben “Cookie Choir” for children ages 5, 6 and 7. The children will learn simple action songs with a focus on fun and love of music. Fall Session starts October 3, 2018 at 4:30 pm to 5 pm at the Clock Tower Cultural Centre in Campbellford. Tuition: $15 for 6 sessions in total.
All Chorus Members are required to pay an annual Chorus Tuition of $90 which helps cover tuition and operational costs: rental of rehearsal space, musical scores, personnel (including the Assistant Conductors, accompanist and visiting conductors and guest coaches) and out-of-town transportation (if required). Some bursaries are available by application.
The Westben Festival Chorus meets most Monday evenings from early September to early December and from mid February to mid June. The Westben Youth and Teen and Cookie Choruses meet on Wednesdays. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled prior to performances.
For the Fall Session 2018 the choirs will be working on a new concert production called The Little Drummer to be performed at The Barn November 24, 25 and in Peterborough December 1 and in Norwood December 2. This will feature various styles of music, stories and special guest drummer Jordan Mowat.
The Chorus has been performing at The Barn since 2002. The repertoire has included: Vivaldi’s Gloria, Franz Schubert’s Mass in G Major, J.S. Bach's Magnificat, selections from Handel’s Messiah, selections from Gilbert & Sullivan, Broadway classics, traditional Christmas fare as well as original music by Brian Finley. Season 2008/09 included the new musical written by Brian Finley and Michael Nitsch called The Magic Ornament and Wind in the Willows with Tom McCamus and the new musical by Brian Finley and Ken Tizzard, The Selfish Giant. In 2016 the choir performed in the world premiere of Brian Finley's opera, The Pencil Salesman. The choir also joined the four youth choirs on July 2, 2017 at the free concert called Canada Dreams at The Barn. In the Fall 2017 a new narrated concert production called Upper Canada Christmas was performed based on the writings of Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr-Traill. It featured original music, winter songs and traditional Christmas favourites. Most recently the Choruses performed a fully staged version of the musical Joseph & the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat.
The Westben Chorus and Westben Youth and Teen Choruses are singing ensembles committed to artistic excellence through the preparation and presentation of both dramatic and concert-style choral projects. They seek to involve dedicated, able and committed singers in a rigorous and stimulating atmosphere. Members study vocal production, music-reading, musical styles and languages, and perform a wide range of sacred and secular repertoire. Designed to be a self-sustaining entity, the WFC, YC and TC perform independently and with professional guest artists.
Auditions are held annually in September or by special request throughout the season. These are very informal and supportive. Current Members may also be asked to audition yearly at the discretion of the directors. In addition to assessing musical proficiency, the audition is instrumental in the placement of new or returning Chorus Members within the ensemble.
