Finding Philip Glass
Barb Hobart & Brian Finley chat about the day’s featured composers and performers
“The idea for this commission first germinated in Philip Glass’s garden, where we met for breakfast one beautiful morning in the fall of 2014. I had been a fan of Glass since my tweens. In fact, his music drama, The Photographer, was the first live event that I attended without an adult, at age twelve. As a result, I have always associated his music with coming of age. I was thrilled and honoured when I received Glass’s invitation to breakfast and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of his concerto. There are almost no concertos written for piano and strings since Bach’s time. Both Glass and I have a strong interest in the music of Bach and how it impacts us today. The pairing of the Bach concerto with his own composition will create myriad strands of connectivity, enabling the listener to create bridges between the old and the new.” – Simone Dinnerstein
About the Composer:
Philip Glass is a musical genius. He’s revolutionized the classical world with a style that has also made him a pop cultural phenomenon. He has scored dozens of classic Hollywood films and created iconic works like Einstein on the Beach and Mad Rush. His signature sound has been imitated by countless others, from rarefied classical composers to famous producers of electronic dance music. The New York Times calls Glass, “The most prolific and popular of all contemporary composers”, and The Guardian says, “Can any of us imagine a musical world without Philip Glass?” Glass was honoured recently at the Kennedy Center Honors.

Anne Manson – conductor
Philip glass composed his Piano Concerto No 3 for piano and strings expressly for American pianist Simone Dinnerstein. Westben is honoured to welcome this internationally renowned pianist along with the Manitoba Chamber Ensemble conducted by Anne Manson as they present this remarkable piece full of grace and patient grandeur. Also included is the Double Concerto for Violins (Vivian Fung) and Dvorak’s tuneful American String Quartet arranged for string orchestra.
“In this absorbing and impressive performance, Anne Manson and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra bring out Glass’s intricate polyphonic weave with brilliant ease and assurance.” – Gramophone Magazine
