Barb Hobart and Brian Finley discuss the relationship between the poetry and music.

"Liederabend" means "Song Night". "Lieder" is a type of German art song featuring poetry set for voice, with piano accompaniment, although the piano is considered an equal partner.  The program features two "Song Cycles" (collections of German lieder), sung in German, but there will be translations, as well as a discussion about the music and poetry beforehand.  One cycle will be sung by the mezzo, and the other cycle will be sung by the baritone. Robert Schumann is the composer of both song cycles.

Wallis Giunta, mezzo-soprano (b. 1985, internationally renowned Canadian mezzo-soprano). Alexander Dobson, baritone (has appeared with Westben in the past as "The Pencil Salesman" and as "Aeneas" in Purcell's Dido & Aeneas with the Toronto Masque Theatre) Brian Finley, piano

Frauenliebe und Leben ("A Woman's Life & Love") 8 Lieder (songs) poetry: Adalbert von Chamisso, music: Robert Schumann

Dichterliebe ("A Poet's Love") 16 Lieder (songs) poetry: Hinrich Heine, music: Robert Schumann
