Soprano Virginia Hatfield grew up in Campbellford and began singing lessons with Donna Bennett at the age of twelve.  Virginia graduated with honours from the University of Toronto Opera School in 2003, winning the Distinguished Graduate Award from the Canadian Opera Volunteer Committee.

Her various operatic roles include La Princesse in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges, Miss Wordsworth in Britten’s Albert Herring, Rosalinde in Offenbach’s Barbe-bleue, Yvette in Puccini’s La Rondine, and the title role in Handel’s Alcina under Tafelmusik’s Jeanne Lamon.  She has also created roles in numerous contemporary Canadian operas, from Elizabeth Postuma Simcoe in John Beckwith’s Taptoo!, to Carolyn Boulton in Gary Kulesha’s The Last Duel.

Virginia already has a fine collection of notices in the Globe & Mail, The Toronto Star and Stage Door. Opera Canada magazine called her a ““a splendid lyric with a thrilling top.”  She was featured on the TVO programme VOX, and made her Canadian Opera Company Chorus debut in Peter Grimes, returning for Tosca, Falstaff, and Turandot and Lucia di Lammermoor, The Handmaid’s Tale and La Bohème.   She made her Canadian Opera Company debut singing Miss Wordsworth in the Ensemble Studio’s production of Britten’s Albert Herring and on the main stage in Carmen, Don Giovanni and Fidelio.
