Canadian baritone Gerald Finley began singing as a chorister in Ottawa before completing his musical studies in the UK at the Royal College of Music, King’s College, Cambridge, and the National Opera Studio.
After his initial appearances at Glyndebourne in the Mozart baritone repertoire, he now appears in a variety of leading roles at the world’s opera houses including London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Salzburg, New York, Chicago and San Francisco and Vienna. His Don Giovanni has been seen in Salzburg, Munich, Vienna, Prague, Rome, New York, Paris, Tel Aviv, Budapest and London. He has created the lead roles in major premières: Howard K.Stern (Anna Nicole - ROH Covent Garden), J. Robert Oppenheimer (Doctor Atomic - Metropolitan Opera New York), Harry Heegan (The Silver Tassie - English National Opera), Mr. Fox (Fantastic Mr. Fox) and Jaufre Rudel (L’amour de loin). His expanding dramatic repertoire include recent outstanding successes as Hans Sachs (Meistersinger) at Glyndebourne, Iago (Otello) with the LSO in concert, Rossini's Guillaume Tell in Rome, and Eugene Onegin at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
He performs with all the major orchestras of the world, in oratorio and symphonic repertoire, notably the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, London Symphony the Concertgebouw, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
His discography includes work with Sir Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Kurt Masur and Vladimir Jurowski. With Hyperion Records his releases include Gramophone Award winning CD of Schumann's Dichterliebe, and the Gramophone Award for Songs by Samuel Barber, both with Julius Drake. He has been twice nominated as Gramophone's Artist of the Year in 2006 and 2009.
