Westben’s inaugural Performer-Composer Residency is an international gathering of creative risk-takers whose practice involves some combination of both composition and performance. It is an intensive 4-day collaborative workshop culminating in a final performance - deeply woven into the beautiful rolling hills of Canada’s Northumberland County.
This is not a typical summer music program; it is not based on a division between teachers and students or tuition and competition. Designed for leading professional and dedicated emerging musicians from Canada and beyond, the Westben Performer-Composer Residency encourages a multi-generational exchange within a plurality of approaches to music making while sharing a commitment to building communities through music. The Westben Centre for Connection & Creativity offers a performance nexus and supportive community to create a friendly and stimulating meeting place for Performer-Composers. It’s a welcoming destination to encourage a wide conception of original music making to broaden the musical experience with others.
—What does the program offer?—
A holistic international and intergenerational summit of musical exchange set in a natural, breathtaking landscape, tended by the attentive and loving Westben community. Over the course of the residency, each participant will create their own workshop, participate in everyone’s projects and design and perform in a final concert program of original music for the main summer concert series at The Barn: Westben’s acoustically phenomenal 400-seat timber frame performance venue. The performance will be professionally documented. There will be opportunities to interact with the public at the community clocktower throughout the week and outdoor-under-the-stars-and-in-the-forests pop-up concerts and explorations.
There is no charge to participants to apply or attend. Help fund your travel and your experience here.
—Who is this for?—
For dedicated emerging and recognized professional musicians who integrate a performance and composition practice somehow: whether through improvisation, experimentation, dedicated craft and expansion of their instrument, multi-stylistic compositional interests, sound itself, words and voice, music technology, environmental sound inventions…basically, as long as a singular title doesn't fit your musical resonance, this is for you.
The Westben Centre of Connection & Creativity wants to be the home of the development of Performer-Composers in Canada.
It’s an “open-door” musical laboratory set in a naturally vibrant environment cultivating both the freedom to experiment and an opportunity to share an international perspective.
The corollary of this project is to create meaningful, life-affirming social ecologies of positive growth that embrace uniqueness and are connected to our immediate time and place. It’s a home to peacefully live, work and create and to catalyze a Performer-Composer collectivity that will hopefully last long beyond this residency.
It’s a place where original music is wholesomely supported and can flourish within Westben’s architectural and communal integration of the the breath-taking and breath-giving barn and landscape. You’ll feel it once you’re here.
Sunday night July 8th - Arrival and greeting at the Clocktower.
Monday July 9th, 2018 to Wednesday July 11, 2018 - Each individual will teach a workshop in whatever manner of presentation they choose and participate in each other’s workshops. There are three locations to choose from depending on the material and logistics of the presentations: the barn, the clocktower or several natural settings. There may be mini guest lectures and activities depending on the interest of the participants: philosophy, gardening, music and health exercises etc.
Thursday July 12th - Evening performance for Westben’s main Concerts at the Barn Festival Series which will be professionally recorded and mixed. Participants are responsible for designing the concert program during the week. They may compose something new (encouraged), form new collaborative ensembles or bring in recent works to perform with the other participants.
Musicians will be housed in the area with an extensive network of incredibly welcoming and supportive local billets. Two nutritious and diet-conscious meals per day will be provided. Budgets for materials for projects will be negotiated on a case-to-case basis.
