Review of Lovin’ Dat Hammerstein

LOVIN’ DAT HAMMERSTEIN

Westben Concerts at the Barn, Campbellford

Once in a while, when I come to review a show, I run into a real problem, and that happened today.   What should I do if  the show itself is a really good show,  and everyone performing in it is also really good?  Obviously, I do need to write about it so that others will know, even if there is not much I can say.

Lovin’ Dat Hammerstein is a concert with all the words written by Oscar Hammerstein the second.  The music was written by several composers, but thankfully, they were all good in their way.  The concert followed the history of Hammerstein’s shows.  The pianist/accompanist for the show was Brian Jackson, who may be better known as a Pops conductor, but he is an excellent pianist.  It appeared that Mr. Jackson had been instrumental in putting the program together, and he introduced the various shows and the songs which they took from them, and usually included snippets of useful information, such as “Who was Oscar Hammerstein the first?”

The singers were all ‘way-beyond’ excellent.  Virginia Hatfield the soprano in the group who has performed previously at Westben, is also a local young lady and has performed with the Canadian Opera Company.  She has a light clear voice but with plenty of volume when required, and with very good diction - a matter of importance since, on this occasion, the accent was on the words.  She sang ‘Romance’ from The Desert Song, and ‘Getting to Know You’ from The King and I.

Marianne Bindig is a mezzo-soprano with a very warm tone and a beautifully clear sound.  Sometimes as female voices get lower they also get ‘woolier’ but this is not the case with Miss Bindig, and although she appears to sing more from the classical side of music, her voice seemed perfect for the ‘musical’ stage.  She gave a great performance as Ado Annie singing ‘I’m Just a Girl Who Cain’t Say No’.

Alexander Dobson is a superb baritone, a ringing clear voice, with a wide range, singing everything from ‘Ole Man River’  to ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’ and ‘Some Enchanted Evening’, and Keith Klassen was the tenor who also showed off his acting skills when he and Virginia performed the Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan meeting scene, ‘If I Loved You’ from Carousel.

I was most impressed when the artists joined together to sing duets as in the case of Carousel, or when they performed as an ensemble, some of which I believe were arranged by Brian Jackson.  Oscar Hammerstein and his composers never seem to have scrimped on the number of tunes in each show.  The concert began with tunes from 'Showboat' and even though they didn't include them all, there was 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man', 'OldManRiver', 'Only Make Believe' sung by Marianne and Alexander, and 'You Are Love' sung by Virginia and Keith.  We also heard 'Bill' beautifully sung by Marianne, and 'Why Do I Love You?'  These were just from one show.   Other shows from which we heard excerpts were 'Desert Song' and 'Rose Marie'.

In the second half we heard from most of the musicals written by the Rogersand Hammerstein partnership - beginning with the 1943 hit 'Oklahoma' and continuing right through to 'The Sound of Music'.  It really was an excellent show with lots of memories for those who have seen the various shows in the past.

There should still be time to see this show as it will be repeated on Thursday and Friday 29th and 30th July at 2pm.  You can go online to find out more about it, or phone the box office at 1-705-653-5508 or 1-877-883-5777.   I hope they still have tickets.  Providing the weather is fine, you can even get meadow passes for half price and sit on the grass, or at a picnic table outside the barn.

Out of This World 2010

Westben’s Final Week – Out of This World!

Soprano Virginia Hatfield and her wonderful colleagues take their final bows at the last “Lovin’ Dat Hammerstein” concert on Friday, July 30.  Having played to packed houses, this Broadway review based on music theatre’s famous librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, has proven to be yet another popular production at The Barn.

But it’s not over yet – there is still more musical feasting ahead!

On Friday, July 30, the stage is quickly reset for the launch of our “Out of This World” weekend: three concerts in three days focusing on jazz form a world perspective.

First up, we are thrilled to welcome the Sisters of Sheynville.  Winners of the 2008 Vocal Group of the Year (Canadian Folk Music Awards), this is a toe-tapping, all-female ensemble specializing in uniquely infectious “swing-klezmer” music. This soulful group revitalizes Yiddish swing and klezmer music from the golden age of the mid-20th century fused with contemporary jazz. Inspired by the Barry Sisters' Yiddish swing vocals of the 30's and 40's, this high-energy sextet features intricate three-part harmony supported by a crack ensemble of some of Toronto's leading jazz and klezmer instrumentalists.  The Sisters perform at The Barn on Friday evening, July 30 at 7:30 pm.

On Saturday, July 31 at 3 pm, Westben presents the Sultans of String.  2010 JUNO Award nominees and winners of the 2008 Instrumental Group of the Year (Canadian Fold Music Awards), the Sultans thrill their audiences with a global sonic tapestry of Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz. Be prepared for dazzling musical fusion featuring fiery violin dances, rumba-flamenco guitar and a funk bass over infectious world rhythms.

On Sunday, August 1 at 2 pm, Westben welcomes jazz legend Peter Appleyard to the Barn stage.  Described as a Canadian national treasure, Appleyard has appeared with everyone from Wayne and Shuster to Anne Murray and Oscar Peterson. This brilliant vibraphonist is joined at Westben by jazz greats Reg Schwager (guitar), Neil Swainson (bass), Terry Clarke (drums) and John Sherwood (piano).

Guitar wizard Don Ross also returns to Westben for another evening of dazzling guitar music on Friday, August 6 at 7:30 pm. One of today’s true innovators of guitar composition and technique, Don is the two-time winner of the prestigious US National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship.  For this concert, Don teams ups with one of Europe’s most exciting guitarists, Jimmy Wahlsteen from Stockholm.

Finally, Westben pulls out all the stops for its Grand Finale-Fundraiser of Season 2010 on Sunday, August 8 from 2 to 5 pm.  The Westben Barn and grounds are transformed into the Court of Camelot for this afternoon of “happy-ever-aftering” with Canada’s superstar tenor, Michael Burgess and Westben’s own Donna Bennett. In addition to the spectacular music, (including meadow minstrels), expect delicious refreshments, a dazzling silent auction and a meadow full of Medieval fun!

Please join us for our final days of season 2010 at The Barn. Call the Westben box office for all the details at (705) 653-5508.  In short, there’s simply not a more congenial spot!

Press Release for The Selfish Giant 2010

A new musical by Brian Finley & Ken Tizzard based on the short story by Oscar Wilde

Westben presents the world premiere of the new musical, The Selfish Giant, starring Robert Longo as the Selfish Giant, along with Gabrielle Prata as Virginia Snow, and Donna Bennett as Linette, along with the 50 voices of the Westben Youth Chorus & Friends. Edward Franko Directs. The Selfish Giant will have six performances, from June 11 – 20, during Westben’s 11th season.

Growing out of several months of discussion and debate, this musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s provocative short story The Selfish Giant remains both true to the original while standing alone as a modern work. Brian Finley and Ken Tizzard have masterfully recreated the power and magic of Wilde’s ‘words on paper’ into rich musical themes. Equally relevant to both children and adults, this full length, fully staged theatre piece has a colourful musical score which ranges from infectiously sunny to hauntingly beautiful. It finds an amazing musical meeting place between the worlds of music theatre and opera.

After the success of “Rapunzel” (2005) and “The Little Match Girl Messiah” (2007) both Brian and Ken were excited to join forces to create another musical. Leading busy lives in opposite areas of the music business their creative journey took them through everything from Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” to Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”. The two finally decided on Wilde’s evocatively beautiful children’s story as the perfect meeting ground in which to explore their collective creativity.

“Coming from the world of rock and roll it is such a pleasure to work on a project that satisfies a familiar passion, but also takes me on a musical path that I rarely get to tread on,” said Ken Tizzard

For Brian, a classical pianist, composer and director, it was the voice of nature which drew him to the story. “The piece is a struggle between the natural beauty of the Garden and Man’s incessant desire to impose himself on his world,” said Finley. “It’s all about seeing the beauty right in front of you - and how better to do that than through the voices of children?” In reference to their unique collaboration, Brian thinks that “working with Ken, there are no boundaries.”

With its themes of greed and giving, refusal and redemption, the piece was hand-crafted for the forces assembled. Baritone Robert Longo is known to music theatre goers as the Beast in the Toronto production of Beauty and the Beast, as well as Javert in the US touring production of Les Misérables. Mezzo-soprano Gabrielle Prata is a favourite with opera audiences of such companies as the Canadian Opera Company and the New York City Opera. Soprano Donna Bennett has an extensive list of international operatic experience including the creation of roles by Leonard Bernstein, Hans Werner Henze and R. Murray Shafer. Donna is also co-founder along with Brian of the Westben Arts Festival Theatre. The Westben Youth Chorus is under Donna’s and Brian’s direction and includes children ages 7 – 18 from the Trent Hills community and beyond.

Tickets: $38, $36, $15, $5 plus tax

The Selfish Giant will be performed:

Friday, June 11, 2010 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.,Friday, June 18, 2010 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.

 For Immediate Release
Westben brings music, nature, and innovative online technology together in perfect harmony.

Westben Arts Festival Theatre co-founders Brian Finley and Donna Bennett are proud to announce the launch of Westben’s new website http://www.westben.ca

In 1999, The Westben Arts Festival Theatre was formed as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating, enriching and integrating professionals and amateurs in musical projects and educational activities. Now a charitable organization, it has become one of the most unique cultural experiences in Ontario. Westben’s primary venue, “The Barn”, is located three kilometres north-west of Campbellford, on gently rolling farmland. This magnificent 400 seat timber-frame barn opens onto a lush meadow, surrounded by the gently rolling hills of NorthumberlandCounty. The stage hosts an incredible array of renowned Canadian and international artists, from full symphony orchestras and choruses to chamber music and soloists presenting classical, broadway and world jazz music.
Although Westben has had an online presence for sometime, they felt it was time to refresh the site and take it in a new direction. “Westben truly is a magical experience and we want a website that reflects that magic and provides an online experience that is as unique as the venue itself.”, says co-founder Donna Bennett. “The website needs to be a natural extension of the experience that we have worked so hard to create for our patrons”, she adds.
The website – http://www.westben.ca – was created by the team at Belleville-based ad agency They Integrated Inc., the same agency responsible for the recent revamp of their annual brochure and print advertising, including ads in the LCBO’s Food & Drink Magazine. The new website features an interactive blog, dynamic photo gallery, online ticket system, interactive calendar, and information on the venue and performers. It also features a robust Content Management System that allows Westben to control all of the content on their site while maintaining the integrity of the design.
