Kathryn Shuman is a versatile vocalist and composer who performs regularly and writes music for voices, and instrumental ensembles of varying sizes. Specializing in classical and jazz styles, Kathryn is experienced in performing several different genres including baroque, opera, jazz, blues, funk, soul, folk, and often mixtures of any of those.
She has performed internationally in places including St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and various cathedrals, churches and festivals in Florence, Berlin, Wales, and Ireland. She has also sung in many prestigious music festivals in the US as well, including Monterey Jazz festival in September 2014, with the award-winning small jazz group, Pacific Standard Time.
She is presently at CalArts pursuing an MFA in Voice Performance. She received her BFA at Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University of Long Beach in 2014.
Currently, Shuman is in the process of creating and recording an album with duo project, "Ben and Kat," featuring Ben Finley on bass. This project features vocals and electric bass both using live electronics and effects processing. She and Ben's arrangement of Samuel Barber's Sure on this Shining Night was selected for the CalArts 2015 Capitol records CD. Listen to the CD here. In addition to this project, she is working on a solo album featuring a handful of fellow artists. One of Kathryn's originals, "the habit is who I am" was chosen to be recorded for the CalArts' singer/songwriter project, released May 2015. Listen here. Both albums are due out in early 2016.
