To celebrate our 16th Season we have created a list of 16 Sweet Experiences designed to engage, enrich and enjoy – exclusively for our Members!
1. Shall we dance?
You wouldn’t be the first to be inspired to get up and move to the music. The meadow is a perfect stage for attempting the “Bottle Dance” (Fiddler on the Roof), kicking off your shoes and moving with abandon to The Good Lovelies and Maqueque, taking a spin to “Shall We Dance” (The King & I), or doing a jig to the energetic melodies of Maz or Kelli Trottier & The Mushy Peas.
5. Let music be your travel guide
Russia, Italy, Paris, Thailand, Quebec or Warkworth. Why not let the settings, artists and events of this season inspire your travels? Try someplace new, or try a new experience in someplace you already love – let music be your inspiration. Here are two ideas to get you started:
6. Involve the littles
Bring your kids to Cello Mania! It will be a fun, fun, fun experience with young cellist flash mobs popping up at the Incredible Edibles Festival. Great food, music and surprises await!
9. Feed your appetite for knowledge
Want to know what the inspiration was behind your favourite shows? La traviata, for instance, has a fascinating history and we recommend The Sounds of Paris in Verdi’s La traviata as a worthwhile read. This fabulous volume takes the reader to the Paris that inspired and influenced Verdi's masterpiece. With primary source material, including unpublished musical works, journal articles and rare documents and images, this close examination of the incidental music of La Dame aux camélias – and its musical context – offers an invaluable interpretation of La traviata's modernity.
11. Pack an overnight bag
Experience the music… and more! Westben has created a number of immersive and interactive packages for those who want a unique behind-the-scenes experience. Choose from a variety of packages that bring together a number of events and attractions, including performances, local cuisine, artist workshops and overnight stays. From right next door (the famous Dooher’s Bakery, World’s Finest Chocolate, Empire Cheese, Church-Key Brewing) to just down the road (Warkworth Lilac Festival and Long Lunch) and a picturesque drive away (Cobourg Waterfront Festival, Port Hope Farmer’s Market), we encourage you to come for a performance and stay for an experience. In anticipation of our annual Garden Gala Fundraiser Members received this fun instructional video!
Inspired by the dazzling spirit of Maqueque we feature the ‘Hot Sister’ of the Cuban sandwich, the Medianoche. The telltale difference between the Cubano and the medianoche (besides the fact that one means "Cuban dude" and one means "midnight," the hour at which this sandwich is typically served - being borne as a snack, or bocadito, for late-night consumption after a raucous night of dancing and revelry) is the bread. While Cubanos are typically fashioned on Cuban bread (a crisp, baguette-like loaf whose secret weapon is lard), the elusive medianoche is constructed on sweet, eggy bread similar to challah. The pillowy texture and rich flavor of the bread (brushed in butter and pressed to golden perfection on top and bottom) rounds out the saltiness of the pig products and nicely complements the cheese's mild nuttiness. -- from Sandoozle and Food Republic
